Did you ever imagine we’d be living in times like these? With elected officials responsible for public safety moving to loosen gun restrictions rather than tighten them, even as one horrific massacre after another occurs?
But that’s not all, not by a long shot.
Congress last week failed to renew the Children’s Health Insurance Plan, which provides for millions of children from homes unable to afford to buy health insurance. They just let the deadline pass without doing anything. Once existing money runs out in a few months, it will be over.
President Trump has ended the Dreamer program, leaving thousand upon thousands of helpless people brought here as little children vulnerable to be suddenly arrested and sent to countries they no longer remember.
Republicans are pushing now for yet more tax cuts for the wealthiest people in the nation, including elimination of the estate tax for people worth over $5.5 million individually, while potentially raising taxes on many middle class people by taking away the personal exemption and exemptions for state and local taxes.
If that weren’t enough. President Trump’s appointees are busily destroying protections for the environment while helping large corporations avoid lawsuits and easing their ability to pollute without fear.
Republicans in congress campaigned on their wish to lower the national debt, but are now saying we need to BORROW more money, boosting the deficit, to pay for the tax cuts which will also boost the national debt.
We’re in a spiral destined to transform this entire nation into an oligarchy run by billionaires, with ordinary people living in places that more and more come to resemble Mississippi and Kansas, where bare bone public services actually hurt families and children. And yet these people continue to get elected.
Now we have the “bump-stock” a simple $100 device that allowed the Las Vegas mass killer to convert a number of his legally ;purchased assault rifles into fully automatic weapons-LEGALLY! Chances of outlawing these and confiscating ones already sold are slim at best.
None of these Republicans seem affected by what is happening. They don’t seem to care how many people are shot down. They are more interested in making guns easier to buy and use. Now you can even buy insurance to pay a court judgement if you shoot someone with your gun!
Even the Republican congressman shot and badly wounded while playing baseball with congressional colleagues says he still opposes gun restrictions.
If that’s not the definition of insanity, I don’t know what is.
